In case you’re wondering if this cleanse is for you… here are some of the questions we get asked most commonly.
Can I modify this program to a vegetarian diet?
You can, but the results are not as strong. Vegetarian diets rely heavily on starchy carbohydrates and omit many important sources of protein. This means you’ll be eating many of the same foods repetitively and will have to include certain foods that are not allowed on the full program such as cultured dairy. As long as you eat eggs and dairy, you can make this program work, but we cannot guarantee results. Only include dairy that is organic, cultured dairy such as cheese, yogurt, or keﬁr, all of which should be full fat and plain (even banal ﬂavors such as vanilla have sweeteners added). If you are a pescetarian – a vegetarian who also eats ﬁsh – this program is even easier to modify.
Can I modify this program to a vegan diet?
Unfortunately, no. There are simply not enough sources of complete protein from vegetable sources.
“I don’t eat sweets. Will this cleanse still benefit me?”
Even if you don’t like dessert and chocolate doesn’t call your name daily, you’d probably be surprised to see how much sugar and starch sneaks into your daily meals. While this cleanse helps you move away from literal sugar, even more importantly it helps you identify and root out all the other sources of sugar and starch in your diet. It’s also a great way to kick start a real-food lifestyle, get your energy back, and lose a couple of inches while you’re at it.
“I don’t have any weight to lose. Will this make me underweight?”
This cleanse isn’t specifically about weight loss. it’s about bringing your body back into its own natural balance, which for most people does involve weight loss. If you are underweight and need to gain, it will help you do that; if you are overweight and need to lose, it will help you do that, too.
“I don’t have time to do all this fancy food preparation.”
This cleanse does require an investment of time, but we’ve given you loads of tips on how to keep it manageable. Also, we have added a new, scaled-down and simplified meal plan for those who want to keep your food prep super simple and speedy.
“I can’t cook! How am I going to make all my own food?”
We’ve had many people do this cleanse who couldn’t cook at the beginning, and were pros in the kitchen by the end of the two weeks. You’ll have lots of support from Chef James and others in the group. This is a GREAT way to learn!
“I’m way too addicted — I love me some sugar!!”
In our opinion, there’s no such thing as “too” addicted. Yes, there are differing degrees of sugar addiction, and in some cases it can be extreme. This Sugar Control Detox is an excellent way to begin and you might be surprised at how little you need sugar at the end of it. Of course there’s a chance you might need some additional support, but this style of eating will be your friend through the process.
“I’m super active and I’m worried I’ll be hungry and feel deprived.”
We have had many athletes – including those actively training for Olympic events – go through this program with outstanding results. There will probably be a few days where you don’t want to train hard as your body recalibrates, but you will give your body the opportunity to burn its preferred fuel source during workouts without the lactic acid burn.
“I’ve done all the programs – calorie-counting, point-counting, fat-free, meat-free, low-carb – and none of them worked for me. What will make this any different?”
One of the things that makes this program different is the group support you get through the process. Every body is unique, and sometimes a little tweak here or there in the protocol can make all the difference. In this group format, you’ll get lots of opportunity to work with Margaret, Chef James, and the others in the group to troubleshoot as you go through the two weeks. Short of working one-on-one with a nutritional therapy practitioner, this is the next best thing.
“I’m breastfeeding, but I’d love to lose those last few pounds of baby weight. Is this program appropriate for me?”
When breastfeeding, you definitely want to be careful with any detox program. This program is a nutrient-dense, whole foods diet that is actually ideal for nursing mammas AND their babies. In fact, since we eliminate most of the common allergens, once-colicky and fussy babies often thrive when their nursing mom eats this way. Many breastfeeding women have used this program to lose those last few pounds of baby weight (Margaret included) quite successfully, but there are some parameters you’ll want to be mindful of. We recommend you wait until your baby is at least 3 months old before doing this program, and check in with Margaret about some special additions you can make to enhance the experience for you.
